The work
Eleni collects the fragments herself — limestone broken off the terraces above Ágios Nikólaos, carried back in a rucksack, washed, and left on the studio roof for a season before she will paint on them. The surface decides the picture: where the stone is porous the casein sinks and goes matt, where it has been polished by weather the oil sits on top and holds a gloss. She does not sand them flat. The horizon in each work is the one line she allows herself.
Why it took five years
Because a stone has to dry for a year before it will take paint, and because she abandoned the first eleven. What is hanging is the second attempt at the same idea, which is usually the one worth hanging.
Hanging
Antonis hung the show over two Sundays with Eleni in the room. The works are low — the centre line is at 140cm rather than the usual 152 — because they are small and reward standing close.
