Materials worth the work

Materials worth the work.

An art-supplies shop, a gallery, and a print studio in Psyrri, Athens. Since 2014.

We started as a basement on Sarri Street.

Marina opened the shop in 2014 with one printing press, two shelving units, and the conviction that there was no shop in Athens stocking the materials a working printmaker actually used without driving to Kolonaki and paying triple. The basement filled within a year. By 2016 we had taken the ground floor; by 2018, the first floor for the gallery; by 2020, the second floor for the print studio and the workshop programme. We have not lost the basement. It is still there, full of surplus paper.

We carry brands we have used. We do not carry brands we have not used. Antonis was an instructor at the Athens School of Fine Arts before joining; he runs the gallery and personally hangs every show. Sofia trained as a screen-printer in Lisbon and runs both the print studio and the eight-a-month workshops. The team of six on the shop floor are all working artists themselves.

Work that leaves this building keeps selling itself

Every edition we print is photographed here, credited to the artist, and posted the week it comes off the press. Fourteen represented artists, six shows a year, and a feed that is nothing but the work and how it was made.

What customers and artists say.

Five of the people who keep the shop, the gallery and the press busy.

I had been buying student-grade oils from a chain for two years. Marina sat me down for forty-five minutes and walked me through what to buy with my budget. Half my supplies, twice the quality. I have not been back to the chain.

Antonis hung the show with me on a Sunday. He moved one painting three times before we both agreed. Galleries in Athens do not work like this any more. ArtCanvas does.

Sofia keeps the press cleaner than mine. The day rate is fair and she is in the room when I need a second hand. The bookbinder upstairs let me hand-bind my edition for the first time.

The shop holds a low margin on our student kits. We have bought from them for nine years. They sharpen pencils on request, free, while the kids wait.

I came in for a sketchbook and left with a Sennelier watercolour set, an Eleni Triantafyllou print, and a workshop place. Three hours.
